Scratch Programming

Please note: New classes are constantly being started. Find out more here.

Scratch is free and is an online programming environment. It can be used on both PCs and Macs.

Scratch was developed by MIT as a drag and drop language that makes it really easy for children to start programming fast (no syntax to remember). Students are making their first program within minutes which really excites them. My current ‘offline’ students keep telling me how much they are enjoying the class and I am so impressed with the games they are making!

Here is a great video that explains what Scratch is, why students should learn to program and why kids love it:

The classes are for 5th through 12th grade. They will be run through Canvas learning management system and each week I will put up a video explaining that week’s concepts. I will assign a task for homework which they will send me to check.

Here is all the info on the classes:

Please share this with friends who may have children who want to learn to program! Questions? Ask in the Comments.

Can you give me some more information about the scope of the class? I have a son who has been playing with scratch for a few weeks and working his way through the Super Scratch book. He’d love to take a class but I’d like to hear a bit more about the projects the kids would be working on and the expectations for the class (level of work, time commitment etc)
    Thanks so much!

    • I use the Super Scratch book in my offline classes (I have a review of it here on my blog) and this course will follow that book fairly closely so if he is managing to do that on his own and can make similar programs, he doesn’t need my course. The students in my offline class spend an hour or two each week working on that week’s project and I expect that will be the same amount of time students will need to do this online class. I assume students have no knowledge so we do start at the very beginning. If you have more questions, I have an email address listed on the Registration page.

  2. […] This was just recommended to me and I just signed up my 12 yr old for it. My 9 yr old will do it as well, just won't "turn in" any work, so I don't have to pay for her. Check it out! I didn't realize how much math was involved. I love seeing math being introduced like this…real world applications FTW! lol It started 2 days ago, BUT you have until the 19th to sign up and play catch-up. It's 10 weeks for $75. Pretty good and we already have played with scratch so I know they like it. Online Scratch Programming Class | […]

Curious is the price per student or per family? I’ve got a 4th grader and a 6th grader that would like to do this. I know 4th is young, but she is really wanting to learn this and she seems to “get” it. So if they are doing it at the same time on different computers, is it two different payments?

    • If they both turn in work, then 2 payments – but I could give a family discount of 25% deduction for the second child. If only one turns in work and attends the weekly online Google+ hangout then just one payment necessary. Both can access the video lectures.

Scratch is absolutely a fantastic way to teach kids logical thinking. Nice going!
